HAND AND WRIST PROCEDURES

Hand and Wrist Skin Cancer

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Patients diagnosed with skin cancer on the hand or wrist—such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or melanoma—are candidates for surgical excision and reconstruction. This includes those with biopsy-proven lesions or suspicious growths that have changed in size, shape, or color. Prompt treatment helps prevent spread and preserve hand function.

THE PROCEDURE
Treatment typically begins with surgical removal of the cancerous lesion, ensuring clear margins. Depending on the size and location of the excision, reconstructive techniques such as skin grafts, local flaps, or tissue rearrangement may be used to optimize healing and cosmetic outcomes. Surgery is often done in coordination with dermatologists or oncologists when necessary.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Most patients heal well with minimal functional impact. Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the excision and reconstruction, but most return to daily activities within a few weeks. Regular follow-up is important to monitor for recurrence or new lesions. Cosmetic and functional outcomes are typically excellent.
