HAND AND WRIST PROCEDURES

Hand and Wrist Dislocations & Fractures

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Anyone who has sustained trauma resulting in a suspected fracture or dislocation of the hand or wrist should seek prompt evaluation. Candidates for surgical repair are those with unstable fractures, misaligned joints, or injuries involving the joint surface or tendons. Early treatment helps restore alignment and preserve function.

THE PROCEDURE
Depending on the injury, treatment may involve closed reduction and splinting, or open reduction and internal fixation using pins, plates, or screws. Surgery aims to realign bones, stabilize the joint, and allow for proper healing. Procedures are often done under regional or general anesthesia.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Patients can expect improved alignment, pain relief, and restoration of function with appropriate treatment. Recovery time depends on the severity and type of injury, but most return to light activities within a few weeks. Physical therapy may be needed to regain full range of motion and strength.
