HAND AND WRIST PROCEDURES

Hand and Wrist Cysts & Masses

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Patients with visible or palpable lumps in the hand or wrist—such as ganglion cysts, lipomas, or other benign masses—may be candidates for evaluation and treatment. Good candidates include those experiencing pain, restricted movement, or cosmetic concerns. Masses that grow, interfere with joint function, or cause nerve compression may require surgical removal.

THE PROCEDURE
Surgical excision involves removing the cyst or mass along with any stalk or capsule to minimize the risk of recurrence. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis using local or regional anesthesia. Depending on the type and location of the mass, imaging may be used beforehand to guide treatment planning.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Most patients recover quickly with minimal discomfort and excellent cosmetic results. Some swelling or stiffness may occur initially but usually resolves with time. The risk of recurrence varies by type of mass—ganglion cysts, for example, may return in a small percentage of cases even after surgery.
