HAND AND WRIST PROCEDURES
Hand and Wrist Arthritis
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Patients experiencing chronic pain, stiffness, swelling, or deformity in the hand or wrist joints due to arthritis may be candidates for surgical treatment. Candidates often have difficulty with gripping, writing, or performing daily activities and have not found relief through medication, splints, or injections.
THE PROCEDURE
Surgical options depend on the joints involved and the type of arthritis. These may include joint debridement, fusion (arthrodesis), joint replacement (arthroplasty), or tendon transfers. The goal is to relieve pain and restore stability and function while preserving as much motion as possible.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Most patients experience significant pain relief and improved hand use following surgery. Recovery time varies by procedure, with fusion requiring longer immobilization than replacement. Occupational therapy may be recommended to maximize results. Long-term outcomes are typically excellent when combined with appropriate post-op care.
