DIEP Flap
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
The DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap is ideal for patients seeking natural breast reconstruction following mastectomy. Good candidates are those who have adequate abdominal tissue for flap creation and prefer an autologous (own tissue) option over implants. Candidates should be in good general health and not have conditions that impair healing, such as poorly controlled diabetes or smoking.
THE PROCEDURE
During a DIEP flap procedure, skin and fat from the lower abdomen are transplanted to the chest to recreate the breast, while preserving the abdominal muscles. Using microsurgical techniques, the blood vessels (perforators) supplying the flap are reconnected to vessels in the chest. This advanced technique allows for natural shape and softness while maintaining core strength and reducing donor site morbidity.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Patients can expect a soft, natural-looking breast that ages with the body, often with improved abdominal contour similar to a tummy tuck. Hospital stay is typically 2–4 days, with return to light activity in a few weeks and full recovery in 6–8 weeks. Most patients are highly satisfied with the long-term appearance, feel, and durability of DIEP flap reconstruction.
