Nail and Nailbed Injury
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Patients with nail or nailbed injuries caused by trauma—such as crushing, laceration, or avulsion—may require surgical repair to preserve nail growth and fingertip appearance. Prompt evaluation is important, especially if the injury involves exposed bone, bleeding under the nail, or damage to the surrounding skin.
THE PROCEDURE
Treatment may involve removing the damaged nail, repairing the nailbed with fine sutures, and protecting the fingertip with dressings or splints. If the nail matrix is involved, meticulous microsurgical repair is performed to preserve nail growth. The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Most nailbed injuries heal well, though nail appearance may be altered depending on the extent of damage. New nail growth typically begins within weeks, and full regrowth takes several months. Proper care and protection of the fingertip during healing help ensure the best cosmetic and functional outcomes.
