HAND AND WRIST PROCEDURES
Hand & Wrist Nerve Injury
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Patients with numbness, tingling, loss of coordination, or weakness in the hand following trauma, surgery, or repetitive use may be suffering from a nerve injury. Candidates for surgical intervention include those with lacerated nerves, compression injuries, or nerve entrapment unresponsive to non-surgical treatment.
THE PROCEDURE
Surgical options include nerve repair (suturing cut nerves), nerve grafting (bridging gaps with donor nerves), or nerve decompression (relieving pressure on the nerve). The chosen approach depends on the type, location, and severity of the injury. Procedures are typically performed under magnification for precision.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Recovery depends on the extent of the injury and timing of the repair. Nerve regeneration occurs slowly—about 1 mm per day—so it may take months to regain full function. Hand therapy is often recommended to support recovery, and many patients experience improved sensation, strength, and dexterity over time.
