HAND AND WRIST PROCEDURES
Hand and Wrist Tendon Injury
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Individuals with tendon injuries—due to laceration, trauma, or overuse—are candidates for surgical or non-surgical treatment depending on the severity. Common signs include loss of finger or wrist motion, pain, and visible deformity. Early treatment is critical to restore full function.
THE PROCEDURE
Surgical repair involves suturing the torn or severed tendon back together, often followed by splinting and structured rehabilitation. In chronic or severe cases, tendon grafting or tendon transfers may be needed. Surgery is performed under regional or general anesthesia with magnification for precision.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Recovery requires careful rehabilitation, often guided by a hand therapist. Splinting is typically necessary for several weeks, followed by gradual motion exercises. Most patients regain good function, although full strength and range of motion may take several months. Adherence to post-operative therapy is key to optimal outcomes.
