HAND AND WRIST PROCEDURES
Dupuytren's Contracture/Disease
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Patients with visible thickening or nodules in the palm, or finger contractures that limit hand function, may be candidates for treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture. This condition tends to progress over time and is more common in older adults, men, and those of Northern European descent. Candidates typically seek care when hand function becomes impaired or contractures interfere with daily activities.
THE PROCEDURE
Surgical options include limited fasciectomy (removing the diseased tissue) or needle aponeurotomy (a minimally invasive technique to release cords). In select cases, enzyme injections may be used to soften and release tight cords. The surgical approach depends on severity, finger involvement, and patient goals.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Most patients experience improved finger extension and hand function, though recurrence can occur over time. Recovery varies based on the procedure—minimally invasive options have shorter downtime, while open surgery may require splinting and physical therapy. Final results are typically seen in a few weeks to months.
