HAND AND WRIST PROCEDURES

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (open)

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES
Patients experiencing numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hand—particularly in the thumb, index, and middle fingers—may be candidates for open carpal tunnel release. This condition often affects those with repetitive hand use, wrist trauma, or underlying health conditions like diabetes or hypothyroidism. If symptoms persist despite conservative treatments like wrist splinting or steroid injections, surgery may be recommended.

THE PROCEDURE
Open carpal tunnel release involves making a small incision at the base of the palm to access and cut the transverse carpal ligament, relieving pressure on the median nerve. This direct approach offers excellent visualization of the anatomy and is especially beneficial in severe or complex cases. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Patients can expect improvement in numbness, tingling, and hand function within weeks of surgery. Grip strength may take longer to return, particularly if the nerve was severely compressed. Light activity can resume soon after surgery, but full recovery typically occurs over 4–6 weeks, with hand therapy sometimes recommended for optimal results.
