Thermage®

Women today have more options than ever before to treat early signs of aging. For many of our patients, facial aging begins to show not so much in wrinkling, but in loss of skin tone and elasticity. For those women who want to look their best long before it's time for a facelift, Thermage® in Virginia is an effective option. Thermage has also proven effective for tightening abdominal skin after pregnancy or weight loss.

Thermage is a safe, clinically proven way to tighten skin, improving tone, contour, and texture through the natural stimulation of your own collagen. Our office now offers Thermage NXT for Northern Virginia residents. We are the first plastic surgery practice in the area to offer this exciting new technology.

Experience Thermage in Virginia

What Is It?

Thermage is completely non-invasive, meaning that no needles and no scalpels are required. A single treatment tightens your existing collagen and stimulates new collagen growth. You will see immediate improvements, which will continue to develop over 3 to 6 months. Results can last for years, depending on your skin condition and aging process.

How Does it Work?

To understand how Thermage works, it helps to understand the components of the skin. The facial skin is made up of three distinct layers: a visible outer layer on the surface called the epidermis, a collagen-rich underlayer beneath the surface called the dermis, and the deepest layer beneath the dermis called the subcutaneous layer, which has a web of collagen fibers running through it.

When the collagen in these three layers breaks down due to sun exposure, genetics, or simply time, your facial skin begins to lose elasticity and become lax. Naturally, treatments that work on just the surface can't do anything to restore the collagen in the deeper layers of your skin.

Thermage is the only non-invasive procedure available that tightens and renews your skin's collagen in all three layers. Thermage's unique Capacitive Radiofrequency (CRF) technology safely heats your skin's underlayer and the web of collagen in the inner layer, causing an immediate tightening, as well as improved tone and texture. The improvements will continue and become even more noticeable for 3 to 6 months after treatment as new collagen grows.

Your Procedure

The procedure itself is normally performed in a single session that takes from 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the area to be treated. There is no downtime with Thermage, so you can quickly resume your normal routine. General anesthesia is not required, but to make sure you are comfortable the doctor may offer light pain medications prior to treatment.

During the treatment, patients undergoing Thermage in Virginia will feel a sensation of heat each time the device delivers radiofrequency energy to the underlayer of the skin. This indicates that your collagen is being stimulated and tightened. After treatment, your skin may be slightly red for a day or two, but most people resume regular activities immediately after treatment.

Immediate and Continuing Results

You should feel and see your skin becoming smoother, firmer, and tighter immediately after your Thermage treatment. You may also notice some contouring effects which will enhance the shape of your face. Continued improvements to your skin as a result of the production of new and increased collagen, as well as some additional contouring effects due to continued tightening, will be revealed over time.

Unlike lasers, Thermage works on all skin types, colors and tones. Unlike injections or fillers, Thermage works on your entire face: forehead, eyes, nasolabial folds, jaw line, jowls and the area under your chin. Thermage also can be used to treat loose skin on the abdomen, arms, hands and legs. Patients aged 35 to 60 typically see the best results, as skin that is too lax will not improve as dramatically.
