This 54 year old woman presents for breast augmentation. She was quite petite but was always unhappy with the size of her breasts. She wore a size 34 A cup bra. She underwent breast augmentation surgery using 300cc smooth saline breast implants. She initially did well but developed uneven swelling the night after her surgery. She was evaluated the next morning and found to have evidence of a postoperative hematoma on the right side. She was returned to the operating room that same day where the hematoma was drained. The bleeding had already stopped by this time and no obvious cause for the bleeding was found. The remainder of her recover was uneventful. She returned to work 1 week later and had no further problems. Her bra size increased to 34D.
This type of complication is not typically covered by traditional health insurance. Fortunately, the costs of treatment of this problem were covered by an insurance policy purchased by Dr. Krieger for each of his cosmetic surgery patients. This policy provided by CosmetAssure covers many costs associated with treatment of early complications of cosmetic surgery. Dr. Krieger has participated with this program for many years and provides this insurance free of charge to all his cosmetic surgery patients undergoing surgery under general or regional anesthesia.
