Which is better, silicone or saline breast implants?

At our practice in Northern Virginia, breast implants are offered in saline or silicone gel filled. The biggest difference between silicone and saline breast implants is the feel and the price. Silicone implants typically feel more natural, while saline implants feel less like natural breast tissue but cost less. No one type of implant is "right" for everyone, so during your consultation, Dr. Goldberg or Dr. Krieger will help you decide which type of implant is right for your anatomy, goals and budget.

How should I choose my breast implant size?

Choosing the right size for you depends on anatomy, personal preference, and lifestyle. Our surgeons help women to determine their ideal size by "trying out" different implant sizers, looking at photos, and thoroughly discussing proportions and goals. We also employ computer imaging technology to help women choose a size.

Is there any way to know what my breasts will look like after augmentation?

Yes. Dr. Krieger uses the latest Vectra 3D-imaging technology from Canfield Scientific, Inc. to scan your body and then show you computer-simulated results of what your breasts could look like with breast implants. In Virginia, this cutting-edge technology isn't widely available and there are only 2 such systems in the Washington DC area.

After breast augmentation, how much recovery time do I need?

Most women take only a few days off of work to recover from surgery. During the first few days of recovery, it is best to rest and avoid activities like reaching over your head or bending over. As time progresses, you can increase your activity, but women shouldn't participate in heavy exercise for a few weeks.

Is it common to combine tummy tuck with breast augmentation?

Yes, it is very common and safe for Virginia tummy tuck patients to combine breast augmentation and tummy tuck. This combination of procedures is often called a Mommy Makeover for women who want to restore their bodies after having children.

Should I wait till after having children before having breast augmentation?

It's important to remember that your breasts go through drastic changes during and after pregnancy. Sometimes women lose or gain breast volume after pregnancy, meaning the results of your breast augmentation may change after having children. However, if you don't plan on having children for some time, you might consider having breast augmentation sooner. Just remember that your results could change.

Am I too old for breast augmentation?

If you are healthy and in your 50s or 60s, then you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation. Many Virginia breast augmentation patients are in this age group and still achieve beautiful results.

Is breast feeding with implants safe?

Yes. Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Krieger take special precautions when performing breast augmentation to ensure that women can still breast feed after surgery. Silicone and saline implants are safe and do not present safety risks for children while breast feeding.

How long does breast augmentation surgery take?

Breast augmentation usually takes one to three hours to complete. However, most Virginia breast augmentation procedures take closer to one hour than three.

When does swelling after breast augmentation begin to subside?

Swelling begins to resolve after the first week. Your breasts will continue to change as swelling diminishes and the tissues relax. It takes about 4-6 weeks for the swelling to completely disappear, and your final results continue to emerge over about 2-3 months.
