Liposuction

Men and women across the U.S. work hard to achieve a healthy, fit appearance. However, even hours at the gym and a strict diet sometimes fail to yield the results that we desire. Oftentimes factors beyond our control - such as heredity - curse us with unwanted bulges that seem to resist all our best efforts to shrink them. In Fairfax County and Northern Virginia, Liposuction is consistently one of the most popular procedures performed. This body sculpting surgery can produce results where diet and exercise fail, permanently removing isolated pockets of fat and re-contouring our "trouble spots."

Northern Virginia Liposuction - Your Options

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes unwanted pockets of fat from the body by suctioning it out via a thin vacuum tube inserted under the skin. Though the fat removal is permanent, it is important that you maintain a stable weight in order to retain the new and improved body shape that this procedure affords you. Liposuction is not appropriate as a weight loss tool, but can remove stubborn, isolated areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Several different techniques are available, and the surgeons at our Fairfax County office can explain your liposuction options and help you determine which type will work best for your anatomy and desired outcome. If you have a great deal of excess fat and loose muscle in your abdominal area, your surgeon may recommend a abdominoplasty (abdominoplasty) in addition to your liposuction procedure.

Tumescent Liposuction

The tumescent liposuction technique features the injection of an anesthetic liquid into the fatty tissue immediately prior to its removal. This liquid causes the fat pockets to become swollen and firm, making the procedure easier to perform and providing pain relief after the surgery. Tumescent liposuction reduces the patient's chances for post-operative blood loss, swelling, or bruising. It also allows for the safe removal of larger quantities of fat than the older techniques permitted.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

Harnessing the power of sound, ultrasonic technology at our Fairfax County practice can make your liposuction procedure more effective. Areas of fat are exposed to high-pitched sound waves, which cause the fat to break apart and liquefy. The liquefied fat is easier to remove, so the patient's physique can be more precisely contoured.

Power-Assisted Liposuction

During traditional liposuction, your surgeon manually removes fat with a device called a cannula. Power-assisted liposuction refers to the advanced cannula instruments that Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Krieger use to remove fat with more precision and efficiency. This cannula vibrates at a high rate of speed, breaking up fat and allowing for more precision than the manual back-and-forth movement used with other methods. This method allows for rapid removal of fat in a gentle, controlled fashion.

Recovery and Results

Drs. Goldberg and Krieger are highly trained liposuction surgeons who make every effort to minimize the downtime and discomfort associated with your procedure. Liposuction procedures can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending upon the extent of the procedure. Both options are available to you, as Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Krieger safely perform these outpatient procedures in certified hospital surgical facilities. As with any surgical procedure, there will be discomfort afterward, but this is easily managed with either prescription or over the counter pain medication.

Your recovery will depend on many variables, including the size of the treated area and the type of procedure you undergo. Generally, Northern Virginia liposuction patients return to work and everyday activities within 1 to 2 weeks of surgery. You will be given specific instructions for your aftercare by your surgeon, which will include wearing a tight-fitting support garment for several weeks, and walking regularly to prevent blood clot formation. After a few weeks, you will be able to begin enjoying your new, sleeker physique.

Drs. Goldberg and Krieger can assist you in determining which method of liposuction - or combination of methods - is best suited to your particular needs.
